How many rolls of Armaflex Chez Moi 19 mm do you need for your van?

Van size Examples 19 mm rolls
Compact~10–13 m² VW T5/T6, short-wheelbase Transit Custom, Trafic L1 2–3
Mid-sized~14–17 m² Trafic L2, Jumpy/Expert XL, Ducato L1H1 3

Why Armaflex Chez Moi 19 mm is a good default choice

If you’re still unsure which thickness to choose for your walls and ceiling, the 19 mm is a choice you won’t regret. It strikes a good balance: it delivers the thermal performance you need in a van without the bulk of the 25 or 32 mm.

A brief look back

Armaflex wasn’t originally designed for vans: it’s a technical insulation material intended for buildings and industry. A few years ago, Heode came up with the idea of using it to insulate converted vans. The idea has since caught on: today, it’s used in countless conversions by professionals and DIY van owners alike.

Closed-cell technology

Every cell in the foam is completely sealed: moisture cannot get in or migrate through the material. In practice, Armaflex also acts as a vapour barrier, with no extra layer to add. With fibre insulation such as hemp or wood wool, you need a separate vapour control layer — an extra step and expense, and a potential point of failure if it isn’t installed perfectly.

💡 In practice, that means no condensation trapped between the metal bodywork and the lining, no corrosion quietly taking hold and no mould in the corners. Peace of mind for years on the road.

Microban® and A+ indoor air rating

Microban® protection is built into the material, not applied to the surface. It remains active even if you cut the sheet. The A+ rating (ISO 16 000) means the insulation emits no volatile organic compounds once installed — a detail that matters when you sleep and cook in a confined space.

Which areas of your van?

The 19 mm is designed for large surfaces: side walls, ceilings and rear doors. That’s where it performs best, covering most projects in typical conditions in France and central Europe.

  • Side walls — the main area, where much of your comfort is determined
  • Ceiling — consider adding mechanical fixings every 500 mm alongside the adhesive to keep it secure over time
  • Rear doors — often overlooked, despite being a significant source of heat loss
  • Cab partition — if you’re insulating the divider between the cab and living area
💡 Uprights, frame members, reinforcements? These narrower areas are better insulated with 6 mm or with 10 mm, which are thinner and easier to fit into tight corners. A common combination is 19 mm on large surfaces and 6 mm on the framework.

For projects in cold conditions or year-round van living, take a look at Armaflex Chez Moi 25 mm — it offers around 30% more thermal resistance while taking up only moderately more space.

How to install your Armaflex Chez Moi 19 mm, step by step

1
Fit your supports before the insulationFit battens, rails and permanent supports first. If Armaflex is compressed beneath a fixing, it loses much of its insulating ability because its air cells are crushed.
2
Degrease the metal bodywork with Armaflex CleanerWork from top to bottom. It’s a step you might be tempted to skip, but it’s precisely what helps the adhesive hold over time. Avoid acetone and white spirit, which have different chemical properties.
3
Cut with a fresh blade (allow an extra 5 mm per measurement)Elastomer wears blades out faster than you might think. Change them regularly, or use the dedicated cutting kit — a blunt blade tears the material instead of slicing through it.
4
Check the fit before removing the backing filmOnce you remove the backing film, the insulation is fixed in place. Peel it back gradually in 20 cm sections, smoothing by hand to push out bubbles, then press firmly.
5
Seal the joins with Armaflex ChezMoi TapeAn unsealed join, even one just a few millimetres wide, can be enough to create a condensation point that eventually damages the metal bodywork.
🎵 Acoustic option: fit theArmaComfort Barrier B 2 mm directly onto the metal bodywork before the 19 mm to help dampen vibrations and road noise a little.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Armaflex Chez Moi 19 mm the best-selling thickness?

Because it provides effective insulation for walls and ceilings without taking up too much living space. It strikes the right balance between performance, thickness and cost.

19 mm or 25 mm for my walls?

The 19 mm suits the vast majority of projects in France and Europe. The 25 mm makes sense if you regularly head to the mountains or Nordic countries, or live in your van year-round, including through winter.

Do I need an additional vapour barrier?

No. The closed cells stop moisture from migrating through the material — one of Armaflex’s advantages over fibre insulation.

Two layers of 19 mm or one of 32 mm for extreme cold?

Both work. Two layers of 19 mm (≈ 38 mm) often cost less than one layer of 32 mm for comparable performance. The 32 mm is quicker to install in a single pass.

Does Armaflex Chez Moi replace AF?

Yes, since April 2026. The same technology, with a formulation revised for vans. Both will remain available until AF is discontinued at the end of 2026.
