The Armaflex AF 19mm self-adhesive roll: the premium insulation for converted vans and campervans
Insulation is one of the most important steps in your van conversion. At Heode, we took the time to install and test the Armaflex AF 19mm (also known as Armaflex ChezMoi 19mm) before recommending it to you. Our verdict: it is the simplest, safest and most complete solution for high-performance thermal insulation in your campervan or converted van.
This roll of self-adhesive Armaflex AF 19mm covering 6m² (6m x 1m) effectively prevents thermal bridging. In summer, you stay cooler for longer. In winter, you keep the heat from escaping. Real living comfort, whatever the season.
Which Armaflex AF thickness to choose? Full comparison table
Before ordering, it is essential to understand the role of each Armaflex AF thickness. Here is a summary table to help you choose — and to combine thicknesses intelligently for optimal insulation of your van or campervan.
| Thickness | Surface area / roll | Primary use | Recommended areas | Thermal conductivity λ | To combine with |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6mm | 15m² | Finishing & very narrow areas | Thin uprights, inaccessible reinforcements, 2nd layer | 0.033 W/(m·K) | 19mm or 32mm as main layer |
| 10mm | 10m² | Reinforcements & intermediate areas | Side reinforcements, wheel arches, shallow casings | 0.033 W/(m·K) | 19mm or 32mm on large panels |
| 19mm ← you are here | 6m² | General use — best quality-to-thickness ratio | Side walls, ceiling, doors | 0.033 W/(m·K) | 10mm or 6mm for finishing |
| 32mm | 3m² | Maximum insulation — large recessed areas | Van rear, large flat panels with sufficient space | 0.033 W/(m·K) | 10mm for reinforcements |
Why choose Armaflex AF 19mm over another thickness?
The 19mm is the reference thickness of the Armaflex AF range for van insulation. It is the best compromise between thermal performance, installation flexibility and bulk. Thick enough to cover large panels (ceiling, sides, doors), it remains flexible enough to conform to the curves of your bodywork with ease. Reinforcements and areas too narrow for the 19mm will be treated with 10mm or 6mm as a complement.
For the deepest and most voluminous areas, some converters opt for 32mm or layer two sheets of 19mm — the total thickness of 38mm exceeds the 32mm while offering greater flexibility during installation.
How many Armaflex AF 19mm rolls do I need to insulate my van?
Here are the quantities recommended by our Heode conversion specialists, based on numerous completed projects. These figures are for complete insulation of the walls, ceiling and floor.
| Vehicle size | Recommended Armaflex AF 19mm rolls |
|---|---|
| L1H1 | 2 rolls |
| L2H1 | 3 rolls |
| L2H2 | 3 to 4 rolls |
| L3H2 | 4 to 5 rolls |
| L3H3 | 5 to 6 rolls |
These quantities may vary depending on your installation technique and the level of finish required. If in doubt, order one extra roll: it is always better not to run short in the middle of a project.
Technical advantages of the Armaflex AF 19mm (ChezMoi range)
The Armaflex ChezMoi 19mm roll is the premium version of the Armacell range. Its technical properties are superior to the XG and ACE ranges:
- Microban® antibacterial protection integrated into the material — prevents the growth of microbes and mould
- Integrated vapour barrier — durably controls condensation and prevents moisture build-up on walls
- Very low thermal conductivity: λd = 0.033 W/(m·K)
- Service temperature: from -50°C to +110°C
- Acoustic attenuation: ≤ 28 dB(A)
- Rot-proof material — resistant to corrosion under insulation
- Fire-resistant — compliant with fire standards applicable to vehicles
- EPD label (Environmental Product Declarations) — closed-cell material free from substances harmful to health
- Powerful self-adhesive face protected by a translucent polyethylene film, to be removed at the time of installation
Made from elastomer (rubber-derived), the Armaflex AF 19mm is extremely flexible. It effortlessly conforms to all the curves and angles of your bodywork — an essential quality for insulating without leaving any thermal bridges.
For enhanced acoustic insulation, discover the Armacomfort Barrier B 2mm self-adhesive — as thin as it is effective. Important: it must be applied before the Armaflex AF.
How to fit Armaflex AF 19mm in your van? Step-by-step guide
Fitting the Armaflex AF 19mm self-adhesive roll is accessible to any converter, even a beginner. Here is the equipment needed and the steps to follow.
Essential equipment:
- Work light
- Würth tape measure
- White chalk or white permanent marker (for marking cuts on the black surface)
- Disposable gloves (optional)
- Clean cloth or professional paper towel
- Armaflex Cleaner 1L — essential degreaser for long-lasting adhesion (use outdoors, wear a mask)
- Würth universal cutter or Armaflex cutting knife kit
- Armaflex AF adhesive tape 15m or 30m for joints
Step 1 — Cleaning the metal surface
Apply the Armaflex Cleaner 1L to the entire interior metal surface using a clean cloth. This step is non-negotiable: it ensures the adhesive holds over time and maintains insulation performance in the long run.
Step 2 — Measuring, cutting and fitting
Measure and mark your templates, cut the Armaflex AF 19mm roll, then peel off the translucent film starting from a corner. Carefully stick each section onto the metal surface. The vast majority of reinforcements are accessible from the rear. For inaccessible reinforcements, fill them with Armaflex flakes.
Step 3 — Sealing joints with adhesive tape
Use the Armaflex AF adhesive tape in a 15m roll (also available in 30m) to cover all joints between sections. This tape completes the airtight seal of your insulation. For an L1H1, one 15m roll is generally sufficient alongside 2 rolls of 19mm.
Armaflex ACE, XG or AF: which range to choose for your van?
Armaflex ACE (or Accoflex) — Originally designed for outdoor pipe protection, made from copolymer and polyolefin. Does not feature AF technology and may contain particles not recommended for inhabited living spaces.
Armaflex XG — Entry-level version in elastomeric foam. No Microban® protection, no EPD label, less dense closed cells. Less effective at the same thickness than the AF.
Armaflex AF (ChezMoi range) — The premium option. Microban®, EPD label, optimised thermal conductivity, enhanced water vapour resistance, fire-resistant. The only range genuinely designed and proven for living spaces in converted vehicles. At Heode, we offer the AF at the price of the XG.
